Movie Madness: Umma (2022)

(Available on Netflix)

I can’t think of a good stinger for this one. Ha! (Get it? Bees, stinger??)

Because this was made by a major studio and because it had actors in it I’ve actually heard of (well, two actors I’ve heard of), I had some high hopes for this movie. Alas, it let me down. (I suppose I should have known because one of these actors is Dermot Mulroney, who was in Scream 6, which was worse than this or any other movie ever).

Was it supposed to be scary? I thought it was a horror movie, but it kind of turned out to be more about this lady’s mother issues and how her mother abused her. It seems like that would make an OK horror movie but not really but maybe that’s not what they wanted? Maybe it was supposed to be a psychological-type thing? Either way it wasn’t all that interesting (or scary).

This lady runs a successful bee farm and has a pretty great daughter, but that’s not enough to quell the horrible haunting memories of her mother’s abuse, which involved electricity (I couldn’t help but notice that the bees buzzing sounded like electricity, which kind of seems like it was on purpose but I don’t know what they were trying to say with that).

The Bee Lady’s uncle finds her to hand over her mother’s ashes (she is dead, you see, and that’s why she has been cremated). Then weird stuff starts happening (but not really that weird?), and the Bee Lady’s normally good relationship with her daughter goes downhill (but only for like 5 minutes and then everything is OK again).

Perfect together: The lady from this movie and the brother from Better Call Saul, as neither one of them can stand electricity.

Gratuitous mother/daughter slapping

Gratuitous jerk-uncle who should mind his own business

I wonder if I should start a bee farm? Bees are so cute.

It was still better than Scream 6.
